Adelaide One Pound Specifications.
Type 1 One Pound: Weight: 1. 869gms. Type II One Pound Weight: 2. 8 81 gms. Edge: 23mm. Edge: Milled. Composition: 22 Carat Gold. 916.6 gms Fine .33% Silver.
Crenellated inner circle.
The Adelaide Pound Type 11 has on the reverse side a Crenulated inner circle, and the lettering “Value One Pound” is smaller than the Type 1 Pound. The lettering around the rim is larger, and there is no vertical die crack.
The 1852 Adelaide Gold Pound was introduced as an Emergency issue at the height of the gold rush in the 1850’s. Local jeweler Joshua Payne, was given the task of engraving the dies, and after a small number had been struck the reverse side of the die broke causing severe die cracks to appear on the coins.
The coins were known as Type 1, One Pounds, and are the rarer of the two types. Type 11 Pounds were struck to a total mintage of 24.000. coins. All of these type II coins were later recalled, with the exception of those coins then in private hands.
These Type II coins were withdrawn for remelting when the rising price of gold made minting these Adelaide Gold’s Coins uneconomical.
The Adelaide Gold One Pound Type IIis today reserved as one of Australia’s rarest, and prestigious icons, and an extremely rare coin in its own right.
