The Year in Review 2022

Dear Clients.

The year just passed was as difficult as I can remember in 28 years of trading.

Prices for most sections of the numismatics market have maintained a steady, slight increase in price. In the top end of the market an increase of 5% during the year were recorded. Pre-decimal KGV five & ten pound notes are becoming items of investment as opposed to being collector items.

Sovereigns continue a good, steady growth pattern, with prices at sale through TRN ranging up to 15% above advertised prices.

Decimal star* banknote replacements have been disappointing, with prices up to 50% below RR (Source: Renniks 31st edition, 2021).

Auction as an option continues to be a constant source of worry, with sales being recorded at fire sale prices. The valuations offered to vendors are designed to ensure a sale at any cost (usually at the expense of the vendor). This is not an ideal situation in a market that is experiencing sales pricing difficulties, with little or no regard to correct grading, as originally sold. We are managing many family portfolios of both banknotes & coins with prices at sale well above RR.

Above this price a small valuation will apply, which can be offset, if you decide to use TRN through to the final sale of your portfolio.
