It is a fascinating part of Australia’s history when the Commonwealth Constitution authorised The Australian Federal Government to legislate to issue Australian banknotes. Upon Federation in 1901 drafts were sent all Australian Private Banks. In 1910 a bill was passed in Federal Parliament known as The Australian Notes Bill, accented to in October 1910. This bill placed a 10% tax on all Private Banks of Issue, effectively forcing all private banks to withdraw their own banknotes.
